ET 8: METROPOLIS AND MODERN TIMES

These are two very different sequences about the same topic.

Fritz Lang’sMoloch” sequence from Metropolis (about 2:23 into the excerpt):

And the inimitable Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times

Compare them with regard to mise-en-scene. Consider ONLY the following three aspects of mise-en-scene — but discuss how they relate to each other in each excerpt:

  • Setting
  • Music
  • Movement choreography (is one or both a “dance”?)
Refer to expressionistic/realistic elements in each aspect.
Chaplin made Modern Times in 1936 — about ten years after Metropolis. Do you think he was satirizing Lang’s vision or not?
