Muybridge’s strobe photographs were a factor in two modern art movements: cubism and futurism.

One of the most famous paintings of the early 20th Century is Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase. It shocked audiences at the 1913 Armory Show in New York.

Ducham’s painting was inspired by this study by Muybridge.

Compare the painting and the photograph. How are they alike? How are they different In particular, how is each “modern”? What aspect(s) of “modernity” does each contain? What is the relationship of each to technology, to the “art” of the past?  especially 19th century nude paintings?

Which is the more “modern”,  in your opinion, and why? Which do you think was the more dangerous or controversial to the audiences of the time?
